The true essence of Byron Bay is slowly eroding. Help us fight to keep it.
Bring Back Byron’s Nude Beach Campaign.
We have launched our latest campaign, ‘Bring Back Byron’s Nude Beach’, in an effort to secure a new location for a clothing-optional (CO) beach in the Byron Shire.
Since last year’s closure of Byron’s long-standing and renowned CO beach at Tyagarah, the local naturist community have been left with no alternative and nowhere to go.
Up until 31 August 2024, Tyagarah’s CO beach had been Byron’s famed, and only, legal nude beach since 1998.
Now, the local naturists, who have enjoyed a CO beach in the Shire for the last few decades, would be required to drive a whopping 600km (6 hours) south to the next legal nude beach, Samurai Beach, in order to enjoy a skinny dip without the risk of being fined.
It’s absolutely ridiculous that we now have over 2200km of coastline here on the east coast with not one legal nude beach in the vicinity. And if Byron, of all places, can’t make the legalisation of a nude beach happen, it’s a bleak outlook for the local naturist community moving forward…and, worst of all, a sad reflection of how truly conservative and prudish a place Byron has become.
A nude beach was one of the last remaining fragments of what Byron Bay used to represent in its heyday. It represented the kind of nostalgic freedom that drew people and tourists to the Shire in the first place.
We are really hoping that the broader community will share our plight and support our mission to restore a CO beach in the Shire. Even if they don’t have an active interest in the lifestyle, we hope that they can at least empathise with our hope to revive some of Byron’s formerly-renowned egalitarian and progressive attitudes that would allow for a CO beach in the area once again.
In our campaign to revive a nude beach in Bryon, we will be engaging with Council, policymakers and the general public. We will be hosting rallies, peaceful protests and events to bring awareness to our mission and our campaign.
Because there is power in numbers, we will be relying on the support our community to turn up and rally alongside us.
Keep your eyes peeled and join our mailing list to keep up to date with upcoming events and how you can get involved or support us from afar.
We deserve a nude beach in the Shire, and we’re doing everything we can to achieve this goal.
We hope you will join us.
